Fast and Abstaining from meat – Dispensation

The below is a statement that explains about “dispensation” and our personal responsibility in regards to the serious obligation, excerpted from our Diocese of Orange:

“The Lenten season calls all faithful Catholics to remember in heart and mind the redemptive self-sacrifice of Jesus for the life of the world. From the earliest days of our faith, Christians have been called to special penance and sacrifice during not only the 40 days of Lent but especially on the significant days of the Lenten liturgical season, Ash Wednesday, Good Friday as well as all the Fridays of Lent. In light of this, all Catholics in the United States are encouraged to enter into sacrificial penance during these days and, specifically, to refrain from the eating of meat on all the Fridays of Lent, with the added penance of holy fasting on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. While this discipline of penance and fasting is serious, it no longer binds one under pain of grave sin. For a sufficiently good reason (e.g., a special family celebration, an ethnic festival, Lunar New Year, etc.), one may dispense oneself from this serious obligation and may legitimately substitute another day of the week to fulfill this penance. It is for this reason, that there is no need for a specific ‘dispensation’ from the Bishop, lifting the penance for these days.”
