PSA Update

All of us are players on this team called St. Cecilia Catholic Church.  Some are able to give large amounts to the PSA.  Others are not able to do this, and should give whatever their circumstances allow.  But every gift takes us closer to our goal. Everyone who gives has an effect on the outcome.  Give to the PSA.  Make your presence count.   Through our first month, 38% of you have contributed $111,200.96.  We are well on our pace to make our goal.

Humor

This is literally a 'church signs' debate , being played out in a Southern US town, between Our Lady of Martyrs Catholic Church, and Cumberland Presbyterian, a fundamentalist church.  From top to bottom shows you the response and counter-response over time.

Msgr. Sammon’s Corner of the World

St. Cecilia's Parish has an extensive Mission Ministry.  Begun by Msgr. Sammon 50 years ago, the program is still thriving due to the dedication of members of our parish who use the blue envelope every month to donate money.  We sincerely thank all of you who are so generous.  Whether you give a dollar or more is not so important as the fact that you care. We know that all missionaries around the world pray for you and your loved ones.  They in turn ask for your prayers as well as donations.  Prayer is the strength of the missionary's life.  Click here for more.

 Dear Friends,

During this flu season, we asked that everyone receive Holy Communion in the hand as an added precaution against spreading the virus.  Soon, the flu season will recede and we will encourage those who wish to, to begin to receive on the tongue again.  In anticipation of this, we offer a reflection on Holy Communion from St. Peter Julian Eymard.  St. Peter, who died in 1868, was the founder of the Blessed Sacrament Fathers and the Sister Servants of the Blessed Sacrament.  He was a great priest and apostle of the Holy Eucharist.

Dear Friends,

One of the wonders of today’s technology has been in the area of games.  In the past, we all remember playing Monopoly and Scrabble on those otherwise boring nights with nothing to do.  Today, it isn’t unusual to see a youngster quietly and intently playing a game on his portable Wii.  And this can go on for hours!

With the good of technology there is always a dark side, a perversion of the good that is developed.  In the area of gaming there are more and more story lines being developed that place demonic practices and even the devil himself in the most favorable light.  To be sure there have always been dark characters in story videos not unlike the older fairytales that we were told by our parents as they tucked us into bed: the ravenous wolf in Little Red Riding Hood, the hungry witch in Hansel and Gretel.

Dear Friends,

Very soon we begin the season of Holy Lent and that blessed time when we pause to look upon Jesus crucified for our salvation.  In the midst of so much noise and distraction it is easy to forget the Lord Jesus who suffered for us that we might be set free from eternal death and find peace in the world to come and even in this world.

“Be merciful O God to me a sinner of Thy only Son’s redeeming.  Let me not be put to shame or let my soul dwell forever in the dust.  With my whole being I cry out to Thee O Triune God, lift me up and bring me to Thy kingdom and let me praise Thee in the courts of Heaven.”

Culture of Life

Given the scientific fact that a human life begins at conception, the only moral norm needed to understand the Church's opposition to abortion is the principle that each and every human life has inherent dignity and thus must be treated with the respect due to a human person.  This is the foundation for the Church's social doctrine, including its teachings on war, the use of capital punishment, euthanasia, health care, poverty and immigration.  Conversely, to claim that some live human beings do not deserve respect or should not be treated as "persons" (based on changeable factors such as age, condition, location, or lack of mental or physical abilities) is to deny the very idea of inherent human rights.  Such a claim undermines respect for the lives of many vulnerable people before and after birth.

Mission News

During Lent, Catholics are urged to take part in three “disciplines” to enhance their spiritual lives. These disciplines are; PRAYER, FASTING and ALMSGIVING. With the weeks left in Lent, the missionaries in the St. Cecilia Mission Program hope you, the good people of St. Cecilia Parish, have thought about donating to the Mission program as a part of your almsgiving discipline.  You may use the Blue Mission envelope for your donation.

When you place your donation in the envelope, please think of Sister Smitha Vembilly, Superior General of the Sisters of the Destitute, who work among the poor in Karala, India. She writes: “I acknowledge with thanks the recent check. We appreciate the dedication and good will your parish has towards the needy. We do pray for the success of all of your activities.

“The recent development is our congregation is that our founder Father Varghese Payapilly is declared as the SERVANT OF GOD and the beatification process is ongoing. We 1,500 Sisters are trying to live the charism of acknowledging and serving Jesus the Destitute in the poor and the downtrodden.

“We are engaged in Home Mission now.  We adopt a parish, and a team of Sisters, along with volunteers, visit each Catholic family and pray with them. This is an occasion for spiritual renewal and most of the family problems are settled. Now sisters are in Oonnukal parish, covering 750 Catholic families. It is a hectic task, but sisters enjoy it since the outcome is miraculous, and we have a close bond with these families. So do pray for this mission, so that the Holy Spirit may enlighten and guide each one to experience God's Infinite Love.

“Thank you again for all the concern, prayers and support you have towards our mission, and may God bless you, with warm regards and prayer. Sister Smitha.”

Now M-F, Exposition of the

Eucharist!

Beginning this week we will now have exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, Monday through Friday, from after the 8:30am Mass until 5pm.  Time with the Lord will surely bring to our families and our parish many beautiful graces!  Please spend some time with our Lord during the day!

            Fr. Al

Special Note

Thanks to 19 year old Andrew Noriega who has donated enough funds for the purchase of a new thurible (incensor) for Mass and Adoration.  The generosity of our parishioners allows us to have a beautiful church to worship the Lord in!

That His House May

be a True House of Prayer

God bless the Filipino Community and Adele Stagner who have donated toward a new Tabor (Monstrance stand) for our days of adoration.  Adele's gift is in remembrance of her beloved deceased husband, Dale of 16 years of marriage.  Their generosity will be appreciated for many years to come!

                  Fr. Al

During Lent

Please remember that during Lent, no flowers should be placed in the church.  The spirit of the Liturgy is one of stark sobriety as we reflect on the Passion of Jesus Christ during these 40 days of Lent.

A Reminder

Due to the flu season our ushers have noticed a few more tissues throughout the pews and floors of the church. A reminder to all to please remove used tissue for health reasons and the conscious effort to prevent the spread or germs.

The Bequest: Generosity

 That Keeps on Giving.

In the past few months we have had a few good souls remember the parish of St. Cecilia in their last will and testament.   Often, when a bequest is made or a generous donation given, people remember gratefully the long years they enjoyed in our parish, the years spent at St. Cecilia’s school, or the friendships forged through daily Mass or any one of our parish groups.  Their gift is a tangible sign of thankfulness.  The bequest is an expression of love and commitment to those people or groups that we most cherish here on earth.

If you have been touched by the ministry of St. Cecilia, please remember us.  A bequest to our parish ensures your enduring faith in the mission of St. Cecilia, in her mandatum to be the Catholic presence of Christ in Tustin.   Thank you for your consideration, your goodness and your generosity.

Individuals desiring to name St. Cecilia’s parish as a beneficiary in their wills or to make specific gifts need to use the following language:

“I give and bequeath to the Roman Catholic Bishop of Orange, a Corporation Sole, for the use and benefit of the parish of St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church in Tustin, ____% of the residue of my estate (or: the sum of $_____) for its charitable, educational and religious purposes.”

St. Cecilia’s parish also accepts gifts of appreciated stock and bonds.  For more information, please contact Karen Plesetz, Parish Business Administrator at 714-544-3250.

(PSA) .2010

                  Padre Alfredo

Year of the Priest

Dear Parishioners,

In this Year of the Priest, we have decided to have in the bulletin, every week, a picture of one of our priests with a small bio on him and his ministry.  There will always be a prayer under his picture so that you can keep him in your prayers and sacrifices throughout the week.  Thank you for the dedication and love you have for the priesthood and for our Church.

Fr. Al

 Let us pray,

Heavenly Father, please grant to Your faithful servants, the grace and strength to carry out Your mission for the Church each day.  Keep our priests close to You and continue to inspire them to serve others in Your holy Name.  Please help to inspire men who are called to a priestly vocation to answer Your call and participate in the fullness that You have planned for them.  Amen.
