PASTOR'S CORNER :: Father Al Baca
Father Al Baca November 23, 2008
Dear Friends,

As Thanksgiving nears, we are reminded that fall is on the way.  I love this time of year because it also reminds us of family and the love of good friends.  Thanksgiving has its roots in that wonderful tradition of Pilgrims coming to a new country, scared and unsure.  Over time they were able to create a relationship with Native Americans that was beneficial to both cultures.  All of us have the image of that first celebration in our hearts, with Pilgrims and Indians seated around a long table filled with food and genuine friendship.

NOTE FROM THE PASTOR:

*Holy Year of St. Paul
Welcome to St. Cecilia’s. Bishop Brown has named our parish as a parish of pilgrimage in honor of the Holy Year of St. Paul, called by His Holiness Benedict XVI. We hope that the following information may be of use to you and we pray that your visit here will be of blessing and great benefit to you and all those you bring to prayer. more info»

Thanksgiving Collection 2008

This year, our collection will be going to Mercy House Enterprises.  In 1988, Fr. Jerome Karcher, pastor of St. Vincent de Paul parish in Huntington Beach, began the first Mercy House as a response to the growing situation of homeless men in Orange County.  In 1999, Regina House was begun for homeless women.  In 2001, Emmanuel House was begun for people suffering with AIDS/HIV.  This one priest’s vision has changed our county for the better and created new ways of working with some of society’s most vexing situations.  We congratulate “one of our own” on making a difference and taking Christ’s words to heart, “I was hungry and you gave me to eat, I was thirsty and you gave to drink, I was a stranger and you took me in…”  Please be generous and join Mercy House in helping those who are most poor and most misunderstood.

  • THANKSGIVING DAY CELEBRATION
Our parish will celebrate a Thanksgiving Day Mass at 9:00 am., on Thursday, November 27.  Here are a few ideas that will help to make your Thanksgiving celebration more meaningful:

    1.  Please bring non-perishable food items to the Thanksgiving Day liturgy. There will be a procession during the Mass in which we place these food items along with monetary contributions around the Altar. The money collected will be donated to Mercy House.  The food items will be given to our Christian Service cupboard.

    2.  Please bring the bread and wine you will use for your Thanksgiving meal to the Mass.  These will be blessed at the end of the liturgy.  In this way, on this special day, we are reminded of the connection between the Eucharistic table and own family table.

IMAGES AROUND THE PARISH

Christ our Savior graces the front of our parish property on Sycamore Avenue.  Chosen as a gesture of welcome to all our neighbors we have received many compliments from Protestant neighbors and friends on how beautiful the statue is.  The statue is a beautiful witness of Catholic faith that teaches that Jesus Christ is true God and true man, the Savior of all the world.
